Do NFC business cards work with iPhone and Android?
In most cases, yes. Here is where to tap, what can stop it working, and a quick fix list.
iPhone
Most recent iPhones can read an NFC tag without opening an app. Hold the top back of the phone, near the camera, against the card and wait a second. A notification appears at the top of the screen. Tap it to open the link.
Older iPhone models may need the NFC reader switched on in Control Center. If your phone is quite old, the printed QR code is the reliable route.
Android
Most Android phones with NFC read tags automatically. Make sure NFC is turned on in Settings or the quick settings panel. The reader position varies by model, often in the upper middle of the back, so slide the card slowly across the back of the phone if nothing happens.
If the tap does nothing
- Check NFC is on in the phone settings (Android).
- Remove thick or metal cases and wallets with metal plates or card holders that sit between the phone and the card.
- Hold still for two seconds. A quick swipe is often too fast.
- Try another spot on the back of the phone.
- Use the QR code printed on the card. It works through the camera.
A note on metal cards
Metal blocks radio signals, so a good metal NFC card is built with a layer that lets the chip talk through it. Cheap metal cards can be unreliable. Test a card before you order a large batch, and ask the supplier how the chip is shielded.
Good to know
The card cannot be read from across a room. NFC is deliberately short range, which also helps keep it private. Someone must hold their phone right next to your card.
