NFC vs QR business cards: which should you choose?
Both put your details on someone's phone without typing. They work differently, and each has a weak spot the other covers.
The short answer
Choose a card that has both. NFC gives the fastest, smoothest share. A printed QR code is the backup that works on any phone with a camera. Most digital business cards, including ours, combine the two so nobody is left out.
How NFC works
NFC stands for near-field communication. A small chip inside the card stores a link. When a compatible phone is held close to the card, usually within a few centimetres, the phone reads the link and offers to open it. There is no app to install and no camera to aim.
- Strengths: one tap, feels instant, nothing to line up, looks impressive in person.
- Limits: the other person's phone needs NFC switched on, and some older or budget phones do not have it. Metal can interfere with the signal if the card is not built for it.
How a QR code works
A QR code is a printed pattern that holds the same kind of link. The phone camera reads it, and the phone shows a prompt to open the page.
- Strengths: works on nearly any smartphone with a camera, and it also works from a screen or a photo of the card.
- Limits: the person has to open the camera and aim it, a small code is hard to scan in poor light, and a worn or scratched print can fail.
Side by side
| NFC tap | QR scan | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fastest, one touch | A few extra steps |
| Phone needed | NFC-enabled phone | Any phone with a camera |
| Works from a distance | No, must touch or be very close | Yes, if you can see the code |
| Can be shared as a photo | No | Yes |
| Wear and tear | Chip is inside the card | Print can scratch or fade |
Which should you pick for your situation?
- Meeting people in person: NFC first, QR as backup.
- Handing cards out at events or in a crowd: both, since you will meet every kind of phone.
- Posting your card online or on a screen: QR, because NFC cannot be read from a photo.
Whichever you choose, check what the card opens. The tap is only the doorway. A clear profile page with a call button, your WhatsApp and your website is what turns a tap into a conversation.
Quick answers
Do I need an app to read an NFC card?
No. Modern iPhones and Android phones read NFC tags in the background and show a prompt to open the link.
Does the QR code stop working if my phone has no NFC?
No. The QR code works through the camera, so it does not depend on NFC at all.
